Candidate Statement 2023
Dear ISBA Members,

I am excited and honoured to run for the position of j-ISBA Chair-Elect. I am an early-career researcher, having recently started a position as assistant professor at the Department of Economics and Statistics of the University of Turin, Italy. I obtained my Ph.D. in 2021 at the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Prof. Richard Nickl, after which I moved to the University of Oxford for a postdoc within Prof. Judith Rousseau’s research group. My interests focus on the mathematical aspects of nonparametric Bayesian methods, concerning theoretical, methodological and computational questions in complex statistical models.

ISBA and j-ISBA have had a profoundly positive impact on my studies and over these early years of my professional life as a researcher. They have been a constant source of support and inspiration, providing an exceptionally friendly community to relate to, many learning opportunities and avenues to exchange research ideas, and the chance of making long-lasting connections. I now wish to give back to the community, in the hope that future young researchers in Bayesian Statistics will be able to benefit from the same welcoming and supportive environment that I have found.

Above all, I have come to realise the crucial importance of ‘community’ and ‘peer-support’ in the life and work of a junior academic, two values that I would like to help fostering within our field. As Chair-Elect, my first goal would be to strive to increase j-ISBA’s reach, especially in under-represented areas, so that as many young researchers as possible may enjoy the numerous opportunities offered within the Society. Secondly, I would like to explore what form of support system may be implemented (perhaps after the fashion of a virtual mentoring scheme) to facilitate the passing of experience from the ‘more seniors’ among the junior Bayesians onto the new members of the community, an exchange that I believe can make the difference when facing the challenges of pursuing a career in research. Should I have Your trust in this election, I would love having the opportunity to work on such initiatives.
