Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Position Being Sought 2023
j-ISBA Chair-Elect
Candidate Statement 2023
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I recently received my PhD in Econometrics and Statistics from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, advised by Profs. Veronika Rockova and Nick Polson. My primary research interests lie at the intersection of Bayesian computation, machine learning and optimization. I develop new methodology, provide their theoretical guarantees and showcase their potential in real-life applications.

I had my first in-person conference at BaYSM 2022 and then ISBA 2022, which introduced me to our warm and welcoming Bayesian community. I was fortunate to make many friends that I ran into at many subsequent occasions, and I engage with many respected researchers whose work I have long looked up to. The events provided me with invaluable exposure to the latest advances in Bayesian statistics and opportunities to share my own work. In particular, the panel "Updating your (prior) beliefs" helped me tremendously in navigating our career as a junior researcher. I am enthusiastic about contributing to and growing alongside our vibrant community of young Bayesian researchers.

I hope to pass this forward as the chair-elect of j-ISBA. I strongly believe that fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where every individual feels empowered to contribute and flourish is beneficial for the field. I would like to propose the following ideas:

1. I want to introduce an online, monthly working-paper seminar series dedicated to young researchers. This could be a venue for senior students and postdocs to practice their job talks, as well as for anyone wishing to share early-stage work for feedback or to find potential collaborators. By creating a channel to communicate our research interests across borders, we can facilitate collaborations within our community. Personally I found the "One World ABC" seminar series a helpful resource for me to learn the advances in the field and I also shared my research there. I hope to create a similar experience for other junior researchers.

2. Inspired by the panel "Updating your (prior) beliefs", I think it would be valuable for us to create a platform where young Bayesian researchers can openly and safely seek guidance from senior researchers. We could have a column, like IMS, in which we collect questions from our members and solicit advice from experienced scholars. This column could be hosted on our GitHub webpage or posted in the ISBA bulletin.

3. Recognizing the various constraints faced by junior researchers when attending in-person conferences, such as visa issues, limited travel funding resources, and difficulties in finding suitable accommodations, I believe it would be beneficial to establish a dedicated channel (e.g., Slack) for information exchange on these matters. Additionally, organizing meet-ups at major ISBA or other statistics conferences through the channel would provide a valuable opportunity for our community to come together.

I would be honored to serve as Chair-Elect of j-ISBA and I am committed to do my best for the growth of our community.
