Professor - University of Washington
Position Being Sought 2023
Objective Bayes Program Chair
Candidate Statement 2023
I am honored to stand for election for Program Chair of the Objective Bayes Section of ISBA. I completed my Ph.D. in Statistics and Decision Sciences from Duke University in 2007 and then joined the University of California, Santa Cruz as an Assistant Professor, moving through the ranks to become Professor in 2015. Since 2020 I am a Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Washington, where I serve as the Department Chair as well as co-PI in a two major projects funded but the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF):  The Institute for Foundations of Data Science and the Pacific Alliance for Low-Income Inclusion in Statistics and Data Science. My research interests range broadly and include model selection, nonparametric Bayesian methods, and spatio-temporal modeling, among other areas. You can find more information about me at https://sites.stat.washington.edu/people/abelrod/Home.html

Over the years I have been a regular participant in OBayes meetings, and this community has always made me feel at home. Serving as the Program Chair for the Section is one way in which I can pay back some of the support and kindness I have received over years. I also feel that I have the right background and experience to be successful in this role. For example, I have extensive experience in program committees for major conferences. These include the IMS Invited Program for the Joint Statistical Meetings (which I co-chaired in 2013), the NSF/NBER Seminar on Bayesian Inference in Econometrics and Statistics (which I organized in 2012), and the annual PI Workshop for NSF’s Algorithms for Thread Detection program (which I have organized since 2010). I also served in the past as the Program Chair for ISBA’s EFAB Section and on the ISBA Board. In addition to my experience in scientific committees, I also have substantial editorial experience. I currently serve as Associate Editor for four major journals: the Journal of the American Statistical Society - Theory and Methods, Bayesian Analysis, the Annals of Applied Statistics, and the International Statistical Review. I look forward to serving the community in this important role!
