Faculty position in biostatistics at Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech Department of Statistics (www.stat.vt.edu) invites applications for an open rank tenured or tenure track faculty position in biostatistics / health analytics to begin in Fall 2023. Requirements include a Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics or a closely related field. The position is a 9-month tenure or tenure-track appointment with the opportunity to conduct additional extramurally funded research in the summer. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful applicant will maintain a superb research program that is focused on the development of biostatistics and health analytics methods with applications in areas such as precision medicine, clinical trials, population health research or health services research, and/or the improvement of clinical care. It is expected that the candidate will attract and maintain external funding to support her/his program, and will collaborate with scientists across campus, including the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (http://research.vtc.vt.edu/), the Virginia Tech School of Medicine (http://medicine.vtc.vt.edu/), and the Virginia Tech Public Health Program (http://mph.vetmed.vt.edu/index.html).

This position is part of a major emphasis on statistics and biostatistics — including health analytics, data science, and empirically-based decision making — at Virginia Tech. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to be key players in the development of a Biostatistics program, to help promote research in the health sciences, foster synergistic interactions among Virginia Tech faculty, and support the emerging health sciences by building a foundation for additional biostatistics education and research. Expectations for this position also include providing effective instruction and advising to a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students; continuing development of professional capabilities and scholarly activities; curriculum development; participation in department, college, and university governance; and professional service. Required Qualifications

Applicants must have a strong background in biostatistics and health analytics with strong promise for developing, or in the case of senior applicants continuing, a well-funded, internationally distinguished research program; demonstrated experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary research; willingness to cross disciplinary boundaries to tackle complex scientific challenges; a desire to advise and teach a student body which is diverse with respect to socio-economic status, interests, and abilities; and commitment/sensitivity to address issues of diversity in the university community.

Applicants must have a demonstrated track record of leadership in the development of biostatistics programs, both pedagogical and research, a distinguished scholarly record, and/or demonstrated examples of interdisciplinary scholarship employing statistical and data analytical techniques in support of health research.

Applicants must have earned a doctorate in a relevant discipline at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in developing and deploying programs to attract members of underserved populations into biostatistics.
