The Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University in Washington, DC invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for a Data Scientist beginning August 1, 2023. Applicants must have a PhD in Data Science, Statistics, or Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline by August 1st, 2023. Candidates will be required to demonstrate a clear record of academic or professional experience and expertise in statistical/ mathematical-oriented theory and/or applications in data science. There is a preference for expertise and experience in machine learning/natural language processing/deep learning and/or in trustworthy/explainable/transparent algorithms and ethical applications of data science. Successful post-doctoral teaching is preferred.
Responsibilities include establishing an internationally recognized research program that engages students at all levels and wins external funding, collaborating across the university in research and grant efforts, teaching multiple courses a year with associated curriculum development for new courses, and delivering service to the department and to the wider university. In addition to scholarship and teaching, responsibilities will include participation in department, school, and university service.
