The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)/School of Marine Science of the College of William and Mary invites applications for a tenure-eligible Assistant or Associate Professor. This is a full-time faculty position with rank and tenure status determined upon review of candidate credentials. The position will begin in Fall 2018.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold an earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in statistics, biostatistics, environmental statistics or related field at the time of appointment. Applicants with research interests in the development and application of statistical methodologies in marine science, environmental science, or ecology, in areas such as analysis of spatio-temporal data, geostatistics, Bayesian methods, ecoinformatics, hierarchical and linear modeling, multivariate analyses, computational methods for large data sets, forecasting approaches and experimental or sampling design, will be considered. We are particularly interested in applicants that have experience in teaching and statistical consulting within the fields of environmental science, ecology, marine science or related disciplines. Excellence in teaching and strong communication skills are expected. Responsibilities: Annual teaching responsibilities will include an introductory graduate level statistics course and two advanced courses, primarily for graduate students pursuing degrees in marine science. The successful candidate will collaborate on scientific research and synthesis with faculty of VIMS, and provide statistical support to students, faculty and staff. Development of independent lines of research and extramural funding will be encouraged.
About the Virginia Institute of Marine Science: Chartered in 1940, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. VIMS has a three-part mission to conduct interdisciplinary research in coastal ocean and estuarine science, educate students and citizens, and provide advisory service to policy makers, industry, and the public. The School of Marine Science at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for the College of William & Mary. VIMS currently employs 52 full-time faculty members and 256 staff, and has 92 graduate students in master’s and doctoral programs.
